Glass, housing or full assembly: how to decide what to order for a BYD mirror replacement.

A mirror is sold in three quite different forms, and the choice is decided by what actually broke. Ordering a full assembly to replace cracked glass costs two to three times what the repair needs, while ordering glass only for a housing with a failed motor buys the same problem again.

The market behind this is not small. BYD reported 490,168 new energy vehicle sales in October 2026, with overseas shipments of passenger cars and pickups at 169,564 units, up 103 percent year on year, so every vehicle entering a new market eventually needs mirror replacement parts.

Why the Mirror Decision Costs More Than the Part

A side mirror on a modern BYD is a small assembly with several failure points: glass, housing shell, tilt and folding motor, wiring harness, heating element on certain variants, and the cap carrying the brand and indicator strip. Damage maps onto the three supply options, so diagnosis is the whole game.

Option 1: Mirror Glass Only

Glass only is correct when the housing is intact, the motor still tilts and folds, the indicator flashes and only the face is damaged. Ask for the exact reinforcement type: plain bonded glass, a heated element version and a blind spot version are not interchangeable, and heating and blind spot features are ordered wrongly most often.

Option 2: Housing or Shell Without the Electronics

The housing is the middle option and the one most often missed. It is right when the glass is broken and the shell is also damaged, but the motor, harness and bracket remain serviceable. Two checks decide it: does the mirror still tilt and fold, and what is the shell finish, since an unpainted housing needs spray work.

Option 3: The Full Side View Mirror Assembly

A complete assembly is right when the unit is badly damaged, the motor has failed, the wiring loom is cut, or the customer wants a bolt-and-go replacement with the least labour. The trade-off is inventory weight, because the assembly carries motor, harness and control module. Most importers stock glass and housings as fast movers and offer the complete unit as a made-to-order line.

How to Tell Which One Your Vehicle Needs

Ask the workshop for four observations and the option is usually obvious. Does the mirror still move when the switch is used? Is the indicator in the cap still working? Is the glass alone cracked, or the shell as well? Is there a blind spot warning triangle in the glass? Write the answers down, because a verbal description is not a specification.

Model Coverage: Atto 3, Dolphin and the Wider BYD Range

Export naming makes catalogue searching harder than it needs to be. The Atto 3, sold in China as the Yuan Plus, is the model most often met in European and Latin American accessory programmes, where byd atto 3 accessories orders mix mirrors, roof racks, sill trim and lighting. The trap is assuming mirrors follow body panel logic. Why Mirror Replacement Parts Fail After a Few Months

Three patterns dominate. The glass does not match the holder geometry, so it rattles out in vibration. The electrical features are missing, with no heating element, no blind spot module and no indicator wiring. The housing finish and paint code do not match, so a working part still looks wrong. All three are specification failures at order stage, not manufacturing failures.

Identifying the Correct Part Number and Source

Work from the vehicle, not from a product title. Record model, model year, powertrain and VIN, then match against the catalogue for that vehicle, because a title beginning with for 2022 BYD describes a year, and a year is not a fitment. Then choose the tier: original equipment parts for warranty work, equivalent replacement parts for volume supply, third-party parts for styling and upgrade programmes.

Quality Checks to Run on a Mirror Sample

Sample first, at a minimum order of one piece, and check the mirror against the original. Confirm clipping force and glass fit in the holder, motor noise on a slow tilt, the indicator function, the heating element on heated variants, the blind spot module where fitted, connector pin count, harness length and shell finish.
